EXPERIMENTA 2017 ADOLFAS MEKAS AWARD

THE EXPERIMENTA 2017 ADOLFAS MEKAS AWARD for cinematic madness, risk taking and the making of spirited mistakes, is awarded to:::

BEYOND THE ONE by Anna Marziano
A lyrical film about the dialectics of love, pain and separation. Ambitious in its expanded documentary form, containing elements of interview, collage and confession, to tackle an intimate yet universal human topic.

JURY SPECIAL MENTION:

WATCHING THE DETECTIVES by Chris Kennedy
A riveting investigation of the Boston marathon bombing in the hands of amateur online detectives. It reveals the dominance of personal and political surveillance available in the public domain, but more importantly, the frailty and limits of human understanding despite access to all these contemporary technologies.

WERE HERE by Oliver Husain
A poetic sensibility is used to form a compelling portrait of an absence. Transitioning from the seemingly quotidian to self-conscious fantasy, a life and legacy is reimagined through memories, diary excerpts, and performative devices with the family she left behind, to create a composite of a complex woman’s life, art and activism.

The International Competition jury included Peggy Ahwesh, Kamal Swaroop and Merv Espina.

The prize is a copy of ‘Metaphors on Vision’ by Stan Brakhage, edited by P. Adams Sitney
